As winter comes to an end, it’s time to start getting in shape for beach weather. Learn 3 tips that will help you get the summer body you’re after.
They say that a fabulous summer body starts in winter.
Whether you made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape or you’ve got a tropical vacation on the horizon, there’s no time like the present to get your body in shape and looking amazing.
Not sure where to get started? No worries! Here are three tips to help you get the summer beach body you’ve been dreaming of.
1. Establish a Baseline
If you want to work on a summer body, you have to know where you’re starting from. After all, a successful workout program requires tracking and progression; otherwise, you have no way of knowing whether it’s actually working. Furthermore, without consistent monitoring, it becomes challenging to identify areas for improvement and celebrate milestones.
To that end, it’s important to develop a baseline fitness test.
Make sure to include moves that measure the strength of all your major muscles. Good examples of this include:
- How many pushups you can do?
- Plank, how long can you hold?
- How many squats you can do in 60 second?
Once you know how much you can do right now, set a reasonable goal to hit next month and chart out how you should progress over the course of the month.
2. Strength Training
A lot of women avoid strength training like the plague because they worry it will make them bulky.
Ladies, we’re here to set the record straight. There are many different types of strength training, and you won’t bulk up unless you’re expressly training for that goal. And while running and other forms of cardio are great for torching calories, you won’t get muscle tone without strength training.
If you plan to strength train as your primary workout, then you can break your workouts up by day (leg day, arm day, back and core, etc.). If you plan to mix in strength training with other forms of exercise, then you should stick to full-body strength workouts when you hit the gym.
3. Plan Ahead
Finally, if your goal is to get fit and rock your beach vacation, it pays to plan ahead.
If you go to the gym with no idea what you want to do, there’s a better chance you’ll fake your way through a workout and not accomplish anything. Or, worse, the time it takes to figure out what you want to do may give you time to talk yourself out of going at all.
Do yourself a favor. Plan your workouts for the whole week, and stick to the plan. And if you miss one, take a deep breath, relax, and carry on the rest of the week as scheduled without guilt. Life happens.
The same thing goes for your meals.
Instead of figuring out what you want to eat on a daily basis, set aside an hour over the weekend to meal plan for the entire week. This will make it easier to grocery shop and minimizes the amount of effort required to motivate yourself to cook.
